Question: What is the difference between white and yellow gold?

Answer: Think of 24 karat gold as being 100% pure gold. This means all 24 parts are gold. So, if we have 14 karat gold, this means that 14 parts are pure gold and 10 parts are some other alloy, making up the 24 parts. If the alloy is a mixture of copper and zinc you get yellow gold, and if this alloy is mostly nickel or some other white metal, than you get white gold.

Question: Is a six claw around my diamond safer than a four claw setting?

Answer: This is best answered with "It Depends". You see, a four-claw setting is usually thicker and therefore stronger per prong, requiring a pretty hefty hit to nudge the diamond. A six claw setting surrounds the diamond with somewhat thinner claws, but because there are six of them, missing one would not necessarily result in the diamond falling out either... at least for the short term.

Question: Linda tells us the pearls she inherited fell all over the floor. After collecting them, she placed them all into a small bag and now wishes to know if they are real before she makes the decision to have them restrung.

Answer: If they fell all over the floor, the chances of them being real are slim. You see, fine genuine pearls and even good quality imitation pearls are knotted in between. This is done for two good reasons; the first one, of course, being so they do not fall all over the floor if the string should break. The other reason is so they do not rub against each other. I would suggest you bring the pearls in for closer inspection of the individual quality.

Question: What type of link is the strongest for a bracelet?

Answer: The answer to this question is rather important, yet, believe it or not, rarely asked. It's important because it depends on what its use is. Is the bracelet worn all the time, or perhaps only on special occasions? The linkage used will affect its durability. This question is rarely asked in this day and age simply because of all the different links out there vying for the same attention. However, hands down, the oval solid curb link wins my approval of the most durable link whether this is for a bracelet or necklace.
