Birthstones
Over the centuries people have assigned gemstones different supernatural powers.
From our earliest times, people believed that stones had qualities which could protect us from evil spirits or compel fortune and good luck to us. The first known written record associating specific stones comes straight out of the book of Exodus in the Bible's Old Testament. The breastplate of the Hebrew High Priest Aaron had twelve specific gems, one representing each of the twelve tribes of Israel.
The custom of wearing birthstones is thought to have been made popular in Poland in the 15th or 16th century. These stone meanings would have derived from the twelve signs of the zodiac. Since then, stones have been worn and believed to represent the 12 apostles, and more recently; anniversaries, zodiac signs, and the months of the year.
